A Fixed Star Index: Introduction
Go back to the Index
Welcome to the Fixed Star Index, a quick and easy reference to help you connect with the stars and understand their contours.
This guide includes the basic information and attributes of 67 fixed stars that are used often in the tradition and that are a part of my personal stellar practice. I can attest to the powers and importance of each of them and wanted to give you the touchstone to begin weaving your way through the storied sky yourself.
The more I study the fixed stars, the more I believe that everyone should study them too. For advanced practitioners, they provide invaluable depth to your understanding of natal charts and the planets therein. For the beginner or non-astrologer, the fixed stars beg you to look up and experience them yourself. They speak in the language of myth, poetry and archetypes, no math or technical information needed, which makes them much more legible or impactful to even the non-astrologers.
You don’t need to understand how to read a chart to connect with the fixed stars: just eyes that see and a heart that bleeds.
In many ways, the fixed stars are the originator of our divine souls. Plato says as much in Timaeus: “And for this reason the fixed stars were created, to be divine and eternal animals, ever-abiding and revolving after the same manner and on the same spot”. It is said that our souls are birthed in the stars, gaining matter and circumstance as they pass through the planetary spheres. While the planets, known as “wandering stars,” “reverse their motion and are subject to deviations of this kind,” the stars are unchanging. While the planets’ fortunes are influenced by the stars, the stars are too divine and far away to be impacted by the planets.
If you want to satisfy that childhood belief that you had magical powers and a divinely ordained path to take on this earth, then work with the stars. They speak to our uniqueness, how the heavens impact and guide our physical life.
I often tell people that all they need to understand the depth and impact of the stars is to start studying the ones connected to their own nativity: the recognition is immediate and deep, for we are living their stories even if we haven’t been aware of it.
But, considering how many stars there are (hundreds even beyond what is listed here!) and how few extant stellar texts we have, making this introduction can be difficult for the beginner.
As a yearslong fixed star devotee, I can see someone has a paran with Alphecca or a conjunction with Alnilam and know what it means but I didn’t have a quick and easy resource to show people the major themes or heart of a star.
We have a few reputable online databases but they all seem to repeat the same myths and outdated delineations— not something with which I would want someone to begin.
Enter: A Fixed Star Index.
This index is born from that need, namely a beginning step to deciphering the stars and understanding their primary powers for those who need it.
You will not find the full richness of the stars in this index— that’s what my many fixed star essays and lectures are for. Rather, in addition to including their current (as of 2025) zodiacal degree, constellation and associated Greek myth, I tried to distill the primary attributes of the most-used fixed stars. Though you can use them to begin to parse out the meaning of fixed stars in your chart, I intentionally tried to gear the lists to be useful for magical or ritual practice. Now, if you want to bring more wealth in your life or want to see which stars of mysticism you have in your chart, you can simply search for those terms and find all the stars that you can choose from.
I am drawing from those who have worked with the stars before me, like Manilius, Anonymous 379 and Bernadette Brady as well as my own extensive gnosis, client work and direct experience with the stars to provide you the most accurate information.
Know this list is not exhaustive, star-wise or power-wise— which is why I simply call a fixed star index.
Don’t be surprised if new stars are added or new attributes listed as my own knowledge of the stars expands. I’m sure if you start reaching out the stars, you’ll come up with your own attributes for them as well.
